Miklos Gaal : the pioneer of dreamy tilt shift. Finnish b.1974

Bernd & Hiller Becher : fascinatingly dull but not dull topographic work in sets, in black and white, in elevation of subjects like water towers and mine shafts. German b. 1931 d.2007  b.1934

William Eggleston : brilliant usa street-location-built environment-real life-everyday objects photography. American b.1939

Simon Norfolk : Simon photographs all kinds of subject matter. He does it brilliantly, his work is both informative and beautiful. British 1963

Sirrka Lissa Kontinnen : brilliant documentary work in the North East. Finnish b.1948

Thomas Struth : a fine art photographer who shoots cities, jungles and portraits. German b.1954

Jorg Sasse : Another brilliant German who photographs the built environment and was taught by the Bechers at the Dusseldorf School of Photography . As was Gursky and Struth. German b.1962

Eadweard Muybridge : at college I was blown away by the brilliance and complexity of his work showing people and animals in motion. Still am. British b.1830 d.1904

Annie Leibowitz : portrait photographer. In the 1980s and 90s was producing American b. 1949

Yousuf Karsh : really powerful portraits in black and white. Armenian b.1908 d.2002

If I could add Picasso to the list, I would (actually he did take photographs and loved it enough to say “I have discovered photography. Now I can die, I have nothing else to learn”) But he’s a painter
